At just 20 years old, Sariyah’s passing has created an overwhelming wave of grief among family members, teammates, classmates, coaches, and friends who are struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of someone whose future held so much promise.

Her personal records — 8.14 seconds in the 60 meters, 42.38 seconds in the 300 meters, and 1:00.64 in the outdoor 400 meters — reflected more than athletic statistics. Friends and teammates say Sariyah pushed herself constantly, always striving to become stronger and faster while encouraging those around her to do the same.

During the 2023–2024 season, Sariyah contributed to a UIC Flames women’s track and field program that achieved major milestones, including record-breaking performances at the Drake Relays. Coaches and teammates believed she still had tremendous potential ahead of her, making her sudden death even more heartbreaking.

For the people of DeKalb, Sariyah’s success carried special meaning. She was a hometown athlete who proudly carried her community’s name onto every track she stepped on. Now, those who loved her are left mourning not only the loss of a talented runner, but also a young woman remembered for her spirit, determination, and the inspiration she brought to others.
