Findorff Accident, Lift Collapse in Downtown Madison: Construction Worker Gets Injured
A frightening construction accident in downtown Madison left one worker injured Wednesday morning after a telehandler tipped over at an active apartment construction site, causing scaffolding to collapse and prompting a large emergency response in the busy city center.
According to the Madison Fire Department, emergency crews were dispatched around 10:47 a.m. to the intersection of Bassett Street and West Johnson Street after reports indicated that a worker was dangling from the side of a building following a scaffolding collapse. The incident occurred at a Findorff construction project where crews had reportedly been working to adjust exterior scaffolding attached to the structure.
Witnesses at the scene said a telehandler — a heavy lifting machine commonly used on construction sites — was being used during the operation when it suddenly tipped over. As the equipment lost stability, the scaffolding connected to it reportedly collapsed into the street below, creating a chaotic and dangerous situation for workers nearby and people in the surrounding downtown area.
Officials said one worker who had been positioned on the scaffolding managed to cling to the side of the building for a brief period as the collapse unfolded. Tragically, he was eventually unable to maintain his grip and fell an estimated 30 feet to the ground below. Witnesses described the terrifying moment as the worker plunged approximately two to three stories during the accident.
When firefighters from Engine 1 arrived at the construction site, nearby workers were already attempting to assist the injured man. Emergency medical crews quickly began treatment before transporting him to a local hospital. Authorities later stated that the worker’s injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening, though officials have not publicly disclosed the full extent of his condition.
Emergency responders also discovered collapsed scaffolding and the overturned telehandler partially lodged beneath debris in the street. Firefighters immediately secured the area and searched for any additional injured workers. Officials later confirmed that while another worker may have been close to the lift during the collapse, no additional injuries were reported.
Crews remained on scene to contain leaking fuel and oil from the overturned machinery while construction personnel and emergency responders worked to stabilize the hazardous area. Bassett Street was temporarily shut down as cleanup and recovery operations continued throughout the late morning hours.
The incident has renewed concerns about construction site safety, particularly involving heavy machinery and elevated scaffolding in crowded urban environments. Authorities have not yet determined what caused the telehandler to overturn, and investigators are expected to review equipment operations, worksite conditions, and safety procedures as the investigation continues.
The injured worker’s identity has not yet been publicly released.
