Lachlan Muddle, Jervis Bay Village, AUS Death Obituary: Community Mourns

With profound sadness and deep respect, the Australian Defence Force and the wider community are mourning the loss of Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a veteran Australian Army paratrooper and highly experienced Special Air Service Regiment soldier, who died following a tragic training accident at Jervis Bay Airfield on the New South Wales South Coast.

The incident occurred during a specialist parachute training exercise at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Thursday evening, when Warrant Officer Muddle and another experienced paratrooper collided mid-air after deploying their parachutes and navigating toward the designated drop zone in low-light conditions using night vision equipment. Despite their extensive training and thousands of combined jumps, both soldiers were involved in a catastrophic accident during the exercise.

Following the collision, both men fell from height. A second paratrooper, a sergeant from the Australian Defence Force Parachute School, survived the incident with minor injuries and immediately attempted to render first aid to Warrant Officer Muddle upon landing. Emergency response efforts were quickly initiated, but Warrant Officer Muddle could not be saved.

Warrant Officer Muddle’s military career spanned more than three decades, having enlisted in the Australian Army in 1994. He served with distinction in the Special Air Service Regiment, completing five operational deployments, including service in Afghanistan. He was widely regarded as an elite soldier, respected for his exceptional skill as a sniper and military free-fall parachutist, as well as his leadership and professionalism.

Colleagues and commanders have described him as a dedicated and highly skilled operator whose experience and calm presence earned the respect of everyone who served alongside him. Beyond his operational achievements, he was also remembered for his humor, mentorship, and deep commitment to his fellow soldiers.

Australian Defence Force leaders, including Major General Garth Gould, emphasized that both men involved in the incident were exceptionally experienced and that the tragedy underscores the inherent risks associated with even routine military training activities. National leaders, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, paid tribute to Warrant Officer Muddle, acknowledging his service and sacrifice as a reflection of the courage and commitment of Australian service members.

The Returned and Services League of Australia also extended condolences, honoring his decades of service and the lasting contribution he made to the nation’s defence.

In response to the tragedy, the Australian Defence Force has temporarily suspended all parachuting operations while a full investigation is conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
