Salina Shooting Incident, Death Obituary: Authorities Carry Out Investigations
Residents across Salina, Kansas, are continuing to process the shock and emotional aftermath of a deadly officer-involved shooting that unfolded Monday evening following a police pursuit. The incident left 44-year-old Brandon Michael Sears dead and prompted a large law enforcement response in a normally quiet north Salina neighborhood.
According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the incident began when officers with the Salina Police Department attempted a traffic stop around 4:55 p.m. Investigators say Sears exited his vehicle armed with a firearm before getting back inside and fleeing, leading officers on a pursuit through the city. Authorities allege that during the chase, he drove toward a deputy with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.
The pursuit ended near Pacific Avenue, where investigators say Sears exited the vehicle wearing body armor and fired a handgun at responding officers. Police and deputies returned fire, fatally striking him at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured.
