The Merkel, Texas community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 62-year-old Steven Greg Anderson, who died Monday afternoon following a devastating two-vehicle crash east of town.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision occurred around 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of Wimberly Road and FM Road 1235, roughly three miles east of Merkel. Investigators said Anderson was driving a 2011 Ford F-150 eastbound on FM 1235 when a 2018 Toyota Camry, operated by a 19-year-old driver from Abilene, allegedly entered the intersection after failing to stop at a stop sign.
Authorities reported that the impact of the crash was severe, causing Anderson to be ejected from his truck. Emergency responders rushed to provide lifesaving aid, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Taylor County Justice of the Peace Robert Jones pronounced him dead at approximately 4:50 p.m.
Officials said the driver of the Toyota Camry suffered only minor injuries and declined transportation for additional medical treatment.
