Suburban Chicago DUI Crash, Obituary: Authorities Carry Out Investigations

A suburban Chicago community is grieving after a tragic DUI crash in Lombard claimed the life of 35-year-old Laura O’Keefe and left another person seriously injured. The heartbreaking collision has also led to criminal charges against 48-year-old Dwayne Rushing of South Elgin, who has now been denied pretrial release as prosecutors continue pursuing the case in DuPage County.

According to authorities, the devastating crash occurred on the evening of May 10 near South Highland Avenue, just north of Butterfield Road. Investigators allege that Rushing was driving southbound when he struck another vehicle from behind before attempting to maneuver around it. Prosecutors say his vehicle then crossed a grassy parkway and violently crashed into a black Subaru Outback that had been stopped at the exit of a shopping plaza.

Laura O’Keefe suffered catastrophic injuries in the collision. Despite emergency medical efforts and surgery, she later died from her injuries on May 12 while surrounded by medical personnel and loved ones hoping for a miracle. A passenger inside her vehicle also sustained serious injuries and reportedly required intensive medical care following the crash.

Authorities allege that Rushing showed visible signs of intoxication after the collision, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and difficulty maintaining balance. Investigators also stated that an open alcoholic beverage was allegedly discovered inside the vehicle. According to prosecutors, testing later revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.116, above the legal limit in Illinois.

Rushing now faces felony charges including aggravated driving under the influence causing death and aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm. During recent court proceedings, a judge ruled that he would remain in custody while the criminal case moves forward.
